LA VIRGEN DEL SALIENTE / Virgin of Saliente

La Historia 

«Un gran signo apareció en el cielo: una mujer vestida de sol, y la luna bajo sus pies y una corona de doce estrellas sobre su cabeza; y está encinta […] Y apareció otro signo en el cielo: un gran dragón rojo […] Y el dragón se puso en pie ante la mujer que iba a dar a luz, para devorar a su hijo cuando lo diera a luz. Y dio a luz un hijo  varón, el que ha de pastorear a todas las naciones con vara de hierro, y fue arrebatado su hijo junto a Dios y junto a su trono.»  (Apocalipsis 12, 1 – 5).

«A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head; and she is pregnant […] And another sign appeared in heaven: a great red dragon[…] And the dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her son as soon as he was born, he who will rule all the nations with an iron sceptre, and her child was snatched up to God and to his throne» (Apocalypse 12, 1 – 5).

Esa portentosa visión, según la tradición albojense, fue la que contempló el pastorcillo Lázaro de Martos en las postrimerías del siglo XVII en el paraje de los Dientes de la Vieja del monte Roel, a escasos metros del Saliente. Marcado por la triunfante Señora, el pastor de cabras se tornó pastor de almas y regresó a Albox como cura.

This portentous vision, according to Albox tradition, was the one seen by the shepherd boy Lázaro de Martos in the late 17th century in the parish of Los Dientes de la Vieja on Mount Roel, a few metres distant from the current location of Saliente. Marked by Our Lady, the pastor of goats became a pastor of souls and returned to Albox as a priest. 

Decidido a honrar a la Madre de Dios en el lugar donde sus ojos la contemplaron, buscó por todas partes una imagen como la que él recordaba. De camino a la ciudad de Granada, donde esperaba  encontrarla, pernoctó en una venta de Guadix. Al comunicar sus pesquisas a un misterioso  clérigo, éste le hizo depositario de una reducida imagen semejante a la de su aparición. Provisto de la imagencita la llevó al Roel y se alzó una sencillísima ermita en 1716.

Determined to honour the Mother of God in the place where she had appeared to him, he searched everywhere for an image of her like the one he had seen. On the road from Granada, where he had hoped to find such an image, he spent the night in an inn in Guadix. On imparting his quest to a mysterious cleric, he was given custody of a small image similar to his apparition. Endowed with the small image he returned to Roel where a simple chapel was built in 1716. 

La estatua de la Virgen

Fuera de la leyenda, nada se sabe acerca del origen de la imagen de Nuestra Señora. Es una talla de cincuenta y ocho centímetros, de madera de sabina. Inscrita en la tradición granadina de imágenes domésticas iniciada por Alonso de Mena, es un conjunto de enorme dinamismo y no falta quien atribuye su autoría la Roldana.

Outside of legend, nobody knows the origins of the image of Our Lady. It is fifty eight centimetres in height and made of juniper wood. Sculpted in the Granada tradition for domestic images started by Alonso de Mena, it is a piece of enormous dynamism and there are some who attribute its authorship to Roldana.

El centro de la composición es la imagen de la Virgen, de brillante carnación y ojos claros que se
elevan al Cielo. El cabello, de bellísimos bucles, cae por sus hombros y espalda. Vestida con una túnica en blanco estofado, los pliegues resaltan el vientre grávido. Del vientre a la cabeza, la Virgen está aureolada por un manto azul estrellado. Flotando en el espacio, se pliega en sus delicados brazos recogidos en actitud de oración. Los níveos pies de la Virgen descansan en la luna. Dos ángeles sostienen con suma gracia a la Virgen y, justo debajo, el horripilante dragón apocalíptico contrasta con la excelsa belleza de la Virgen y de los ángeles.

The centre of the composition is the image of the Virgin, with luminous skin and clear eyes raised to the Heavens. The hair, in beautiful locks, falls to her shoulders and down her back.  Dressed in an off white tunic, the folds highlight the extended abdomen. From abdomen to head the Virgin is haloed by a starry blue mantle. Floating in space, her delicate arms are folded in prayer. The snowy feet of the Virgin rest on the Moon. Two angels support the Virgin with great grace and, just below, the terrible apocalyptic dragon contrasts with the great beauty of the Virgin and the angels.

El pedestal original se sustituyó en el siglo XIX por una desproporcionada nube plateada de la que brotaban angelotes. En 1981 fue sustituido por el actual, de elegante plata granadina. Muy desgastada la sagrada imagen por la devoción de los fieles, las calamidades sufridas y las malas restauraciones; se procedió a una felicísima restauración integral por don Joaquín Gilabert López en 2014.

The original pedestal was replaced in the 19th century by an out of proportion silver cloud sprouting cherubs. In 1981 this was substituted by the current more elegant one of silver from Granada. Very worn by the devotion of the faithful, accidents and bad restorations it was happily restored by don Joaquín Gilabert López in 2014.

La iconografía recoge la visión del capítulo 12 del Apocalipsis. La tradición de la Iglesia ha visto en esta imagen apocalíptica la figura de María o de la Iglesia, asociada a la victoria de Jesucristo sobre el pecado y sobre la muerte.

The imagery represents the vision of chapter 12 of the book of the Apocalypse. The tradition of the Church sees in this apocalyptic image the figure of Mary or of the Church, and associates it with Christ’s victory over sin and death.
